This book follows a young Indian-American girl named Winnie Mehta. She is struggling to find her place in the world. She is in the last stretch of her high school career. She wants to attend NYU and go into the film studies program there. She has worked hard to get there, she is chair of the film festival, president of the film club and runs her own film review blog. Everything was going great, she went to film camp over the summer. When she gets back her life starts to fall apart. Her boyfriend, Raj, of three years is seeing someone else. They have a new teacher adviser for film club and he strips her of her role as chair of the film festival. Things were looking pretty grim for Winnie.
I loved the culture in the book. I looked up several of the food items they talked about and they looked amazing. I also loved how Winnie tried to merge her Indian heritage with her American upbringing. It has to be very hard to be a first generation American and I felt it in how she conducted herself.
Winnie was easy to love and hate. I loved how passionate she was in everything she did. I hated how much she whined. It seemed like that was all she did. Now I do not know if that is a culture difference so I put up with it. Dev was easy to like as well. I felt that he did genuinely like Winnie and wanted what was best for her. Raj on the other hand, I felt like he only wanted what he could get from Winnie.
