This book follows a young girl named Tenley Lockwood. She is locked in Prynne Asylum. She is alone and very bitter at her parents. We are introduced to a world where people know an after life exists. There are two main realms, Troika and Myriad. The two realms are always fighting and recruiting. Tenley is wanted very badly by both sides, they are willing to almost anything to get her to sign with them.
I really wanted to love this book. I really did, the cover art is amazing. The description was right up my alley of things I love to read and listen to. The voice actors in this book did a great job.
The two realms are set up very much like Christianity's Heaven and Hell. Troika being Heaven and Myriad being Hell. This was an interesting parallel. It was very easy to see from the start. Tenley talks about Myriad bribing people to sign with them. This is something many Christians would see as the Devil's work. Troika will not coerce anyone to sign with them, in fact you cannot sign with them if you are under duress.
Tenley was very much a spoiled teenager. She whined constantly about not being able to choose and being forced to choose. There was no depth to her not wanting to choose. She never gave a very convincing reason, at least not to my standards. It was very hard to relate to her. The love triangle was not even very convincing. I will not be reading the second or third book in the series.
